CBGB Founder, Hilly Kristal Dies at Age 75
Posted Wednesday, 29 August, 2007 by francey
"NEW YORK, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the death of Hilly Kristal, who died on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 from complications from Lung Cancer. Kristal, 75, founded the legendary rock club CBGB and ran the club for 33 years. A singer and songwriter himself, Kristal opened the club to showcase "Country Bluegrass and Blues"; instead the club became a breeding ground for Punk rock. Among the many acts that called CBGB home were Blondie, the Talking Heads, Television, Living Color, Patti Smith and the Ramones. The club closed in October 2006, but CBGB continues, with a retail store in New York City and worldwide merchandise sales; in addition, there currently are plans to open new CBGB clubs in several locations.

Kristal is survived by his daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, son, Mark Dana Kristal, son-in-law Ger Burgman, grandchildren Jenny and Adam Burgman, CBGB, and the thousands of artists and musicians who played the club.

A private memorial service is planned. A public memorial will be held at a later date. Contributions in Hilly's honor may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society or to the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists (168 Second Avenue, PMB 207, New York, NY 10003).

"Music for the Knee Plays" finally coming to CD!
Posted Friday, 27 July, 2007 by francey
David Byrne's album "Music for the Knee Plays", a brass band-and-spoken work score for Robert Wilson's theater piece "The Knee Plays" was recorded in 1984 and has been one of the hardest finds for Byrne completists since. The album was originally released on vinyl and tape only and has never been officially released on CD.

Recently, David went through his archives to dig up the original masters and stumbled on a bunch of unreleased stuff, pictures and unfinished recordings. From all of this, a special edition of "Knee Plays" will be compiled for release on CD this October.

David Byrne's bike stolen!
Posted Friday, 20 April, 2007 by francey
If Papermag.com finds this important enough to post, who are we to ignore this breaking news?

Papermag reports:

David Byrne is many things -- musician, artist, lecturer, blogger -- but most endearingly he's an avid city bicyclist. The vision that lingers most from Miami's Basel Art Fair was that of Byrne making the rounds on his bicycle. So you can imagine how I felt when I heard the news that his bike was stolen over the weekend right in front of the IFC theater! "If anyone sees a bike with both a Che sticker and one for the MOST space telescope that's mine," says Byrne who's already back on the streets sporting a new two wheeler.

Here's a little video of David and his bike in better days...

No sign of the bike on eBay yet...

The record comes in an exact replica of the original cover.

The original "Genius of Love" promo is one of the most expensive Talking Heads related items on eBay, selling for over $80 sometimes. Few copies available in he webshop.

We have a winner...!
Posted Friday, 29 September, 2006 by francey
Some months ago we ran a competition on this website where you were challenged to design a vintage-looking Talking Heads T-shirt. Thanks to everyone who submitted one or more designs - the jury had a hard time picking the best one. Some beautiful designs were submitted and pretty often the simple guidelines about the number of colors etc were totally ignored :)

Nevertheless, we have a winner! Sean C. Taras from Philadelphia, USA (check out his site!) sent a truly unique "Stop Making Sense" design, which has both a vintage look and some typical Talking Heads elements. Just what we we're looking for!

Sean will soon be the proud owner of a couple of shirts with the winning design on it, as well as an exclusive one-of-a-kind sweater with the same print.

For everybody who wants a super limited edition Talking Heads T-shirt, we produced 25 T-shirts (silk screen printed) and put them for sale in the Talking-Heads.net webshop. Available in small, medium, large, extra-large and a special 'girlie' in Medium only.

David Byrne goes country at NYC benefit
Posted Friday, 25 August, 2006 by francey
Musicians like David Byrne and Sufjan Stevens shared the stage with literary celebs like Sarah Vowell and Jon Stewart last night (Aug. 23) at the first Revenge of the Book Eaters charity event, held at New York's Beacon Theatre. Byrne, Stevens and John Roderick of the Long Winters all performed short sets at the event, which will benefit the 826 Writing Centers, tutoring workshops founded by author Dave Eggers.

After an essay reading by Vowell and Eric Bogosian, host John Hodgman introduced David Byrne and his crew of pedal steel, bass, percussion, drums and electric guitar players. Performing what Byrne described as their "first" full country set, the group performed classics like "There Stands the Glass" and country versions of the Talking Heads' "Creatures of Love" and "The Big Country." Byrne was joined by Stevens on banjo for a cover of Lefty Frizzell's "Saginaw, Michigan."

Reissues of original Talking Heads 12" singles
Posted Friday, 9 June, 2006 by francey
Three original Talking Heads 12 inch records from the early 80s have been reissued on vinyl in very limited quantities. The records labels and sleeves are exact replicas of the original versions (with even the original release years unchanged).

12"(1): Once in Lifetime / Seen but Not Seen (in UK picture sleeve)
12"(2): "Songs from The Name of This Band is Talking Heads" (Psycho Killer + Life During Wartime / Take me to the River + Houses in Motion)
12"(3): Burning Down the House / Pull up the Roots + Slippery People (extended cassette version).

The second and third 12" were never released to the public before, only as promos. Oddly enough, the "Name of this Band"-sampler now contains studio(!) versions of the four featured tracks in stead of the live ones that were on the original pressing.

A few copies of each of the maxis are available at the Talking Heads webshop.

Re-issue "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" CD
Posted Wednesday, 11 January, 2006 by francey
The long-awaited re-issue of David Byrne and Brian Eno's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" is scheduled for release in the US on march 28.

The CD contains remastered versions of the original album tracks (sans "Qu'ran", which was only available on the first issues of the album and removed for later pressings because of sampled parts from the Quran) plus previously unreleased bonus tracks:

1. America Is Waiting
2. Mea Culpa
3. Regiment
4. Help Me Somebody
5. The Jezebel Spirit
6. Very, Very Hungry
7. Moonlight in Glory
8. The Carrier
9. A Secret Life
10. Come with Us
11. Mountain of Needles

Bonus tracks:
12. Pitch to Voltage
13. Two Against Three
14. Vocal Outtakes
15. New Feet
16. Defiant
17. Number 8 Mix
18. Solo Guitar with Tin Foil

When MLITBOG was originally released, a bootleg LP surfaced with some unreleased tracks (including the original version of "Jezebel Spirit" with Kathrin Kuhlman smaples) and alternative versions with weird titles. It's not sure if these tracks are featured on the new CD or if this is 'new' unreleased material.

I Zimbra / Jezebel spirit remixes on 12"
Posted Saturday, 8 October, 2005 by francey
A brand new white label 12" vinyl surfaced this week, containing Peter Black remixes of "I Zimbra" (Talking Heads) and "The Jezebel Spirit" (Eno & Byrne). Both songs are pretty much intact and spiced up with floorfiller-beats. The 'reel-to-reel remix' of "Jezebel Spirit" is originally from 1987, but previously unreleased.

As with all white labels, it's a strictly limited pressing (300-500 copies max.), but unlike most white labels, the record actually has labels with track info and a nice "psycho killer" image on the back. We've got a few copies of this very rare 12" for sale - shipping costs take up about half of the order price, but that's what postal services do to us...

Don't Worry About the DualDiscs
Posted Friday, 2 September, 2005 by francey
The eight individual DualDiscs in the upcoming Talking Heads "Brick" boxset will be available separately in January 2006, at least in the US (first four at the beginning of the month, second four at the end of the month).

The "brick" is meant to be an introductory piece to announce the arrival of the remastered discs.

Despite the fabulous list of bonus material included on the DualDisks, there is more uncollected/unreleased material left in the vaults. The reason the reissues are not more "complete" is that unlike a standard CD which can contain up to 80 minutes of music, a DualDisc only holds 60 minutes. So there was simply no room to include more material.

More news about dualdisks and boxsets
Posted Thursday, 25 August, 2005 by francey
This comes from Billboard Magazine:

"The Talking Heads have expanded their eight studio albums with previously unreleased content for their release as DualDiscs. Due Oct. 4 via Rhino, the sets will be packaged together in a white molded plastic box that holds eight jewel cases. Each album has also been remastered by Talking Heads keyboardist Jerry Harrison.

The group's 1977 debut, the appropriately named "Talking Heads: 77," will include a 5.1 mix of a previously unreleased acoustic version of "Psycho Killer" and an alternate 5.1 mix of "Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town." The DVD side sports a live clip of "Pulled Up" taped in 1978 in Berkeley, Calif., and "I Feel It in My Heart" shot in 1976 at New York's now-defunct the Kitchen.

The follow-up, "More Songs About Buildings and Food," is bolstered by alternate versions of "The Big Country," "I'm Not in Love" and "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel," as well as a "1977 version" of "Stay Hungry." The DVD pulls "Warning Sign" from the aforementioned Berkeley show plus "Found a Job" from a 1978 gig at New York's Entermedia Theatre.

Best known for "Cities" and "Life During Wartime," 1979's "Fear of Music" is expanded here with alternate versions of those tracks as well as "Mind," and an unfinished outtake of "Dancing for Money." The DVD side includes performances of "Cities" and "I Zimba" from the German TV show "Rockpop" in 1980.

"Remain in Light" is beefed up with four unfinished outtakes: "Fela's Riff," "Unison," "Double Groove" and "Right Start." "Rockpop" performances of "Once in a Lifetime" and "Crosseyed and Painless" are utilized for the DVD side. The 1983 album "Speaking in Tongues" features an alternate 5.1 mix of "Burning Down the House" as well as videos for that tune and "This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody)."

"Little Creatures" is filled out with previously unreleased early versions of its most notable tracks, "Road to Nowhere" and "And She Was," plus videos for both songs. The 1986 companion to "True Stories," directed by Heads vocalist David Byrne, includes a bonus Pop Staples Vocal Version 5.1 mix of "Papa Legba" and videos for "Wild Wild Life" and "Love for Sale."

The Heads' final studio album, "Naked," tacks on a 5.1 mix of "Sax and Violins" as well as its video and a clip for "Blind."

As previously reported, the Talking Heads and the spin-off group the Tom Tom Club are represented on the Sire Records box set "Just Say Sire," due Sept. 13 via Rhino."

Jamband tribute to Talking Heads CD - win a free copy!
Posted Saturday, 9 April, 2005 by francey
CMH Records is about to release a bluegrass/jamband tribute to Talking Heads on May 10. The album contains 12 Talking Heads (and one David Byrne) song played by up and coming jambands.

Tracklist: Making Flippy Floppy, What a Day That Was, Nothing but Flowers, This Must be the Place, Swamp, And she Was, Stay up Late, Crosseyed and Painless, Thank you for Sending me an Angel, Psycho Killer, Burning Down the House, Heaven.

You can (pre-)order the CD directly from CMH records or from amazon.com.

CMH records sent us some copies to give away in a contest and Chris Frantz, honorary member of the talking-heads.net message board and founding member of the band this is all about, came up with three jamband/jamscene related questions for this contest. Chris is also member of the jury who decides who wins - so good luck :-)

"1. What well know jam-funk band did Fuzz found and record with before his tours with Tom Tom Club?"

"2. What famous jam band musician perfomed with Tom Tom Club at the Jammy Awards at Roseland In NYC and the following day could not remember he had done so?"

"3. What super famous Jam Band musician has the worst body odor ? (Chris and Tina caught a whiff at the same Jammy Awards as above.)"

[hint: winners will be picked randomly, incorrect plausible answers will do]

Send your answers to thcontest@talking-heads.net before April 25, 0:00 CET.

Adrian Belew, the guitarst who not only recorded with Talking Heads but also toured with them and wrote part of Tom Tom Club's megahit "Genius of Love" recently released a brand new album called "side one". The record has been released on Sanctuary Records and because a lot of people who like Talking Heads are also into Belews work (with or without King Crimson), the label sent four copies of the album to talking-heads.net to give away in a contest.

The CD is a must for everyone who's into intelligent guitar music and fans of Danny Carey and Les Claypool will be thrilled to hear they teamed up with Adrian to perform as a 'power trio' on three songs on the new album. Buy it here!.

If you want to try to win a copy first, send three Adrian Belew related questions plus their correct answers to belewcontest@talking-heads.net before April 5th.

The entire talking-heads.net team will play a round of Who Wants to be a Millionaire with all submitted questions and will randomly draw four lucky winners. The winners will be announced here on talking-heads.net by name and will receive the CD soon after.

Oh, and be prepared for more contests soon!

Pressrelease "The Name of this Band" + yet another "Best of"
Posted Saturday, 26 June, 2004 by francey
"RHINO OFFERS HEADS ON PLATTERS

THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS And BEST OF TALKING HEADS Available August 17

LOS ANGELES - Rhino Records is pleased to offer two kinds of overviews of the career of one of the best-loved bands of the 1980s with the release of THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS and THE BEST OF TALKING HEADS on August 17. Both packages, assembled with the members' full involvement, are firsts for the band--THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS has never been available on CD before and THE BEST OF TALKING HEADS is the first single-disc collection of the band's most popular songs.

THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS offers an unusual take on the concert album--rather than a "souvenir of a single night's show," it captures the band's live evolution from 1977 to 1981. Originally released in 1982 as a double album, fans have waited nearly two decades for the CD release of THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS. This two-disc version doubles the original's contents by offering 13 previously unreleased tracks and a trio of rarities from a 1979 promotional only disc ("The Girls Want To Be With The Girls," an early version of "Drugs" called "Electricity," and "Found A Job"). In its expanded version, THE NAME OF THIS BAND provides a comprehensive portrait of Talking Heads as a live band, since it now includes a substantial number of songs from each of the band's first four studio albums.

THE BEST OF TALKING HEADS collects 18 of the group's most popular songs on a single disc for the first time ever. Compiled by the band, THE BEST OF TALKING HEADS includes all the favorites ("Psycho Killer," "Once In A Lifetime," "Burning Down The House," "And She Was), as well as some unexpected selections like "Heaven" and "Memories Can't Wait." This collection provides new listeners with a perfect introduction to this ground-breaking band's work.

David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Tina Weymouth formed Talking Heads (note: no "The") after meeting at Rhode Island School Of Design in the early 1970s. Jerry Harrison, formerly of The Modern Lovers, joined in 1976 and Talking Heads quickly became one of the most important bands to emerge from the New York punk scene. Over the course of their 11-year recording career they released ten albums (including five gold records, one platinum, and two double-platinum), earned critical raves, and racked up more than a few
hits.

Chicks' "Wordy Rappinghood" CD-single
Posted Wednesday, 24 March, 2004 by francey
After getting some heavy airplay on several European versions of MTV during the last few weeks, Pias records released the Chicks on Speed version of the Tom Tom Club classic "Wordy Rappinghood" as limited edition 5" CD-single. Tina Weymouth is one of the guest vocalists on this version, along with electro-divas such as Miss Kittin and Nicola Kuperus (Adult.) Up until now, the Chicks version was only available on their full-lenght album "99 cents" and remixes on 12" vinyl.

The CD-single contains four versions of the song (Radio edit, Trevor Jackson's Playgroup Mix, Dave Clarke's non-Techno mix and Playgroup instrumnetal mix) plus the Bob Dylan-influenced music video (shot in Miami Beach) in CD-Rom QuickTime format (playable on all PCs and macs).

As the CD-single is only out in some parts of Europe, you can order your copy right here for only EUR 8,50 (worldwide priority airmail shipping included !!):

"Grown Backwards" released
Posted Saturday, 13 March, 2004 by francey
David Byrne's latest album "Grown Backwards" has been released in Europe last friday. The album comes in a shiny silverish slipcase with a jewelcase inside. Cover of the booklet is a drawing of David's face, the slipcase has the same image as a photo. No lyrics included, but the fold-up inlay does contain some DB drawings and short stories. Not available on vinyl, alas.

The CD contains "Lazy" in a completely new 9m35s version as bonus track - the song is totally different than all previously released mixes of the X-press-2 version. Heavy on strings and percussion, "Lazy" is a real treat.

"Grown backwards" + bonus track
Posted Monday, 23 February, 2004 by francey
The German edition of David Byrne's upcoming album "Grown Backwards" comes with a bonus track not present on the US (and apparently UK) editions of the album.

It looked like the cover of the German edition would be different as well (a drawing of David in stead of a photo), but this was changed back into the original artwork picture. The bonus track is the number 1 hit single "Lazy", a song David recorded with british producers X-press 2 a couple of years ago.

The German edition of "Grown Backwards" is available here.

Byrne/Eno DJ edits
Posted Wednesday, 18 February, 2004 by francey
A 12" maxi single has surfaced with two extended version of tracks from the David Byrne/Brian Eno album "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts". The record, with MLITBOG-inspired labels, features "The Jezebel Spirit" (8:15") and "Mea Culpa" (8:50") in versions very close to the original. Unlike many other DJ mixes, no beats or samples have been added, just extended instrumental parts (loops) and some subtle echos. There is no sleeve, nor any useful info on the labels, besides the track titles, Eno/Byrne credits and "edits by Mr. K" and "for dj's only". The catalogue number is DK001.

New David Byrne album "Grown backwards" out in March
Posted Wednesday, 28 January, 2004 by francey
David Byrne's new album "Grown Backwards" is scheduled for release on March 16 in the US. There is no information about a worldwide release yet.

From the press release: "David Byrne took a different approach to writing Grown Backwards than he has previously used. He worked from the "top down", humming melodies into a micro-cassette recorder and later unscrambling them to create songs — a significant change from his usual practice of starting with improvised textures and grooves and later adding tunes. The result is a melodic set of fourteen songs that feature strings, rhythm section, and guitar. In addition to eleven original songs, the disc features two opera arias - "Un di Felice" from Verdi’s La traviata and, from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers "Au Fond Du Temple Saint", which features a duet with Rufus Wainwright, as well as Byrne's cover of the Lambchop song "The Man Who Loved Beer".

Tracklisting:

1. Glass, Concrete & Stone - 4:13
2. The Man Who Loved Beer - 2:41
3. Au Fond du Temple Saint - 4:49
4. Empire - 4:12
5. Tiny Apocalypse - 4:03
6. She Only Sleeps - 2:57
7. Dialog Box - 3:30
8. The Other Side of This Life - 4:00
9. Why - 2:54
10. Pirates - 3:52
11. Civilization - 3:17
12. Astronaut - 2:55
13. Glad - 1:55
14. Un di Felice, Eterea - 2:51

Without having heard the album: "Empire" is probably the same track as the bonus track on the Japanese edition of "Look into the Eyeball". "The Other Side of This Life" was played live during the "Lazy Eyeball Tour"; "Un de Felice, Eterea" was played live before during shows with Balanescu Quartet and also during the "Lazy Eyeball Tour".

Here's a Rolling Stones article about the new album.
